Miles of Smiles – Walking for Mum, fighting dementia

Rachel Miles-Edmunds, her sister Sarah, and her niece Ellie, are walking 30 miles this September to raise awareness and funds for dementia. Their team, Miles of Smiles, is a tribute to their beloved mum, Wendy Miles, who is currently receiving palliative care at Royal Court Care Home in Cheltenham.

Wendy’s journey with dementia has been long and difficult, yet she continues to show moments of joy, smiling, chuckling, and delighting in her favourite treats like milkshakes and ice cream.

“The care and compassion she receives at Royal Court have been a lifeline for the family, offering not just medical support but emotional comfort and dignity everyday – I can’t thank the staff enough.”

Rachel and Sarah visit often, bringing sensory toys, crystals, and endless hugs. Their walks through the park, pub lunches, and quiet moments before visiting Wendy are filled with love and reflection. Each step they take is for her, and for every family facing the heartbreak of dementia.

“I’m dedicating this walk to my mum, Wendy Miles, who in her struggles still manages to smile. Dementia runs through our family, and this charity means the world to us. Mum is a warrior and my role model.” – Rachel

Through their Miles of Smiles walk, they hope to raise not only funds but hope, for more understanding, and a future where no one faces dementia alone.
