100 year old Gwyneth on a boat trip

Gwyneth, aged 100, happily helps steer a boat!

Care staff took residents on The Willow Trust boat along the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal.

Everyone had a terrific time, and many other residents enjoyed steering the boat too!

Activity Co-ordinator Julie said,

“The crew said Gwyneth was the oldest passenger to drive their boat in a long time. It was a lovely day, and all enjoyed the views and experience. We started at Saul Junction, went up the Gloucester sharpness canal for about an hour, stopped for a lovely picnic by the Purton Hulks, and turned around where it almost meets the River Severn.”

Did you know the Purton Hulks or Purton Ships’ Graveyard is the site of abandoned boats and ships? They were deliberately beached in 1950 beside the River Severn near Purton in Gloucestershire to reinforce the river banks. The area forms the largest ship graveyard in mainland Britain.
