12 Sep Mr Dennis Wood
Aged 18, as radio operator on HMS Moorsom he listened to U-boat radio frequencies in order to locate their position in the Atlantic. In 1944 his frigate was involved in the D-Day landings, forming part of an outer screen to prevent U-boats getting to the landing craft carrying troops to the beaches. His ship was hit by a torpedo which didn’t explode.
Aged 65, Mr Wood with ‘his first mate and two deckhands’! Mr and Mrs Wood were childhood friends and married near the end of WW2. After Mr Wood left the Navy he continued his career in radio communications across the globe.
Aged 93, we are privileged to have Mr Wood living with us in Faithfull House, Cheltenham.
