Liz Shanks

Age 3  Liz was born and brought up in Ireland ‘I am Belfast through and through’. She is pictured here with her mum who was a Wren officer in the Second World War

Age 17 Liz joined the Royal Navy Reserves straight from school “but I wasn’t allowed to go to sea”. In the reserves she was a member of HMS Caroline and had a particular interest in campaigning for women to be able to go to sea and “it worked!”. She rose to be a Lieutenant Commander.

Age 68 Liz was a board director for the Commissioners of Irish Lights in addition to other volunteer posts. She also “returned to school” later in life and studied History of Art at Queens University, Belfast.

Age 76 Liz lives at Royal Court in her own apartment in the Butterfly Suite in Royal Court and here is enjoying a trip on the GWR steam railway with alongside carer Carol.
