- 37 residents
- Dementia care
- Respite care
Built in 1866, Dowty House is an oasis of calm in the vibrant heart of Cheltenham.
Prior to becoming the fourth residential home of the Lilian Faithfull Homes group in November 2012, the building was a single-home charity for the elderly founded in 1957. Dowty House is now part of the Lilian Faithfull Homes group and shares its training, leadership and administration.
Accommodating up to 36 residents, Dowty House has some en-suite rooms and there is one double room, ideal for a couple or for good friends. With glorious gardens at both the front and back of the home, Dowty House won a ‘Cheltenham in Bloom’ Gold award in both 2011 and 2012 and repeated its success in 2016.
The house has a comfortable lounge and light-filled conservatory where residents can enjoy afternoon tea, eat meals or simply relax. The conservatory looks on to the award-winning garden with its raised beds, water feature, vegetable plot and gazebo. The looped never-ending path and specially-made Dowty House bus stop allow residents with dementia to use the garden with purpose while those who simply want to take it easy can relax in quiet contemplation. Residents help to take care of the vegetable plot and help to ensure that the home’s three chickens, which were all hatched on site, are kept fed and watered.
Dowty House is proud of its lively ambiance, close bonds between staff and residents and varied activities programme. The residents cover a wide range of ages and backgrounds and the atmosphere is inclusive and happy. Care staff at Dowty House are highly experienced and there is a strong sense of loyalty among the team members, many of whom are long serving.
Being so near the Cheltenham town centre means residents regularly enjoy accompanied or unaccompanied trips to the shops and local cafés. In addition residents travel by minibus to Astell House and Faithfull House to participate in activities and socialise with other residents.
The dedicated on-site catering team provides home-cooked meals and cakes to a high standard using many locally sourced ingredients. Residents can choose a cooked breakfast every day of the week if they so wish. Produce from Dowty House’s own garden – fresh eggs and vegetables – feature regularly on the menu and enjoyed by all the residents. We enjoy marking special occasions such as Wimbledon fortnight which we celebrated with Pimm’s and strawberries. For the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee we had an old fashioned street party despite the weather!
Thanks to all the catering staff for their ingenuity in producing food which has set me on the right track and built me up nicely.”
Lilian Faithfull was there when my family needed it most. The staff are always friendly and nothing is too much trouble.” Naomi Turner, family of Lilian Faithfull resident
The ethos of the home is all-encompassing – individual care, maintaining dignity and a quality of life, and making the entire family the focus of care.”
